10 years of Moso Africa captured in 10 incredible inspiration projects

Moso Africa Celebrates 10 Years of Sustainable Innovation

MOSO® Africa is proud to celebrate a major milestone: 10 years of delivering world-class engineered bamboo solutions across Sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. To celebrate, the Cape Town-based team has picked ten African projects that showcase the versatility, durability and elegance of bamboo.

From the state of the art Amazon Web Services Africa Headquarters in Cape Town to sustainable safari lodge decks, Managing Director Andy Paige tells us: “Even after many years and many amazing MOSO bamboo projects, I still get completely awestruck by the creativity and skill of the many people who create projects like these.”

Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge

Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge

Those who want to stand eye to eye with the big animals of Africa and at the same time do not want to sacrifice luxury will get their money’s worth at the Belmond Savute Safari Lodge in Botswana. Sustainability and sophistication are seamlessly integrated into the overall experience, including the installation of Bamboo X-treme® decking boards, which store enormous amounts of CO2.

Imagine Africa Luxury Tented Camp

Imagine Africa Tented Camp

Both the private decks and the boardwalks crossing the Tented Camp, and the communal areas like the pool deck and restaurant, are made of Bamboo X-treme® decking. Around 900 m² of decking boards contribute to the luxury atmosphere in and around the tents. Remarkably, the strength of the material was validated when a 4-ton elephant tested the bamboo deck and it came out with only a little scratch.

Bamboo Walkway at V&A Waterfront in Cape Town

V&A Waterfront in Cape Town

The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town is Africa’s oldest working harbour and one of the most popular tourist attractions. In recent years it has turned into a vibrant hub for art, craft, fashion and design, and is visited by more than 24 million people per year. MOSO Bamboo products have been used in a number of areas and applications in the V&A precinct. Visitors enjoy a leisurely stroll on the East Pier walkway.  Here, approximately 500 square meters of MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® decking has been installed. Its exceptional stability and durability, and its ability to cope well with the harsh coastal climatic conditions at this location, make it ideal for the heavy foot traffic from the ever-increasing number of visitors.

Puku Ridge Safari Lodge

Puku Ridge Safari Lodge

Puku Ridge offers a luxury safari experience while ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding environment. The philosophy of designer Luxury Frontiers centers around durability and sustainability. Therefore, excessive laying of concrete was avoided by constructing a lightweight timber structure on Zambian timber columns instead, and using MOSO® Bamboo UltraDensity flooring for the interior floors. MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® was used for the exterior decking of the lodge and accommodation units.

Madwaleni River Lodge

Madwaleni River Lodge

In keeping with the luxury design of the new Madwaleni River Lodge in South Africa, the owners were looking for a high-end quality deck. "We tested out five different decking products in the harsh African sun on the banks of the Umfolozi River for a year. At the end of the year the MOSO Bamboo X-treme® decking was still in perfect condition and had fared the best of the 5 products. That, combined with their stored carbon, led us to choose MOSO® Bamboo," explains Andrew McGill, Product Manager at African Habitat Conservancy.
