Bamboo timber cladding in detail: the 5 main benefits

Bamboo timber cladding in detail: the 5 main benefits

While bamboo is rapidly gaining popularity, timber cladding is still very popular. Wood is a well-known material, while high quality bamboo timber cladding has only been available for about 10 years. But what are the main advantages of bamboo?

The advantages of bamboo timber cladding in a nutshell:

  1. Maintenance free
  2. Fire resistant
  3. CO2 neutral
  4. Hard & durable
  5. High stability

Bamboo timber cladding is maintenance-free

Are you looking for maintenance-free, natural cladding? Bamboo X-treme® is the right product to fulfil this wish. Just like some tropical wood species, bamboo timber cladding doesn't need any maintenance to stay beautiful for years. In the months to years after installation, the bamboo boards will age, but this will not affect the quality of the material. Painting or oiling is not necessary unless the natural weathered look is not desired. Cleaning is sufficient to prevent algae growth. MOSO® provides a 25 year guarantee on Bamboo X-treme® Cladding boards; if the boards are kept clean and neat, they will last a lifetime.

Fire resistant bamboo timber cladding

Among the various technical requirements, fire safety of façade cladding is a very important one. Especially for projects where escape routes are incorporated or for multi-storey buildings, the European fire class B is a requirement.Bamboo timber cladding in detail: the 5 main benefits Bamboo X-treme® is one of the few natural materials that meets this high fire safety requirement without the need of impregnation with fire retardants. Bamboo X-treme® does not ignite easily thanks to its very high density, a result of the compression of the bamboo and thanks to the heat treatment given to the bamboo at the beginning of the production process. Due to the heat treatment, the flammable content of bamboo is already burnt. With the Closed profile system,Bamboo X-treme® even achieves fire class B-s1-d0 for the entire system, for not only the system with hidden screws, but also for installation on the Grad system.

A sustainable CO2 neutral timber cladding product

Bamboo X-treme® Cladding is CO2 neutral throughout the product lifespan. MOSO® does not claim this without providing the necessary evidence: through LCA and EPD analyses, this information has been substantiated by external experts. During the growth of the bamboo stems, in a managed plantation in China, the bamboo absorbs more CO2 than is emitted during the production and transport to the Netherlands. This means that CO2 is stored during the use of the bamboo timber cladding. Bamboo is not wood but a type of grass and grows very fast: in approximately 5 years a bamboo stem emerges from the root system and matures into a mature bamboo stem that can be harvested. During the warranty period of 25 years, the bamboo will grow back 5 times. Compared to other materials, such as plastic composite, bamboo timber is a sustainable alternative. More information about the ecological advantages of bamboo products can be found here.

Bamboo timber cladding boards are very hard and durable

When it comes to cladding, it is obvious to choose a product with a long lifespan as cladding is not easily replaced. Bamboo X-treme® is maintenance-free because the boards are extremely hard and durable. The Thermo-Density® production method means that the boards are compressed under high pressure which makes the boards heavier than most types of wood and extremely hard. Various biological durability tests show that the material is comparable to, or even better than, the most durable hardwood species. The boards are sturdy and not easily damaged. As the boards do not need to be painted or stained, there is also no damage to the finish. All this makes Bamboo X-treme® extremely suitable as timber cladding.

Timber cladding that stays beautiful thanks to its high stability

Bamboo timber cladding in detail: the 5 main benefits

A beautiful façade cladding not only remains beautiful in colour, but also in shape. Especially with modern timber cladding, often installed as vertical boards or slats, the boards must remain straight and sleek on the façade years after installation. With Bamboo X-treme®, MOSO® has processed the bamboo timber in such a way that its stability is extremely high. Temperature fluctuations and moisture have relatively little effect on the boards, certainly in comparison to most other timber cladding materials. Of course, the way the boards are installed is important here: sufficient ventilation and fixing points are required to retain the shape of the boards.
